How to Beat the Cameras At An Intersection

As many of us in major cities have realized there are these new cameras which are taking photographs of people who run red lights at intersections. Often times it will be weeks even months later when you will get a nice little notice from the city the you live in that says something to the effect of, “You ran a red light!” Attached to this nice little notice will be a photograph of you running a red light along with a bill for sometimes hundreds of dollars. What ever is a person to do? Well if you are not inclined to want to pay these hundreds of dollars for these seemingly marginal infractions then you've got a couple of options available to you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • car
  • impatience
  • ticket
  • conniving

Step1
Fight It: Many times it would seem that these cameras go off at random. While the photograph always have a picture of the stoplight in it, you still have the ability to combat what is seen in the photograph. The big benefit that you have in fighting this ticket is that you were there and you may even remember when this infraction took place. If you don't remember when it happened then you hopefully will be able to pick out the intersection. If you have been to that intersection before and you know that the light changes quickly or if the intersection is very wide or if there was somebody in front of you who held you up these are all legitimate arguments for your case.
Step2
Deny It: More challenging but equally effective would be for you to say it was not you. They won't be able to send you a traffic ticket if they can't see your license plate and this is the really killer thing about these new cameras is that they are very precise. However if you are able to vouch for yourself being somewhere else at the time of the infraction (even if it was your wife driving the car for example) and you can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you always take this car say to work and that you were at work, on the clock, at that time, then that is a reason for nullification.
Step3
Say You Were Turning: If in the photograph the car looks like it could have come from either direction then you could just say that you gunned it when your light turned green and that you were really coming from the other direction. While it may not be totally honest it may work depending upon how the photograph looks.
Step4
Don’t Run Red Lights: While this probably is not the answer you want to hear if you already have a ticket, this is the most true of all of the alternatives. You should not be running red lights. This is a new world we live in with all these new traps trying to catch us up in a snag. You should be very careful not to run red lights and you won't get any tickets in the mail. The safest way not to beat the light.

on 5/10/2008 oh wow..this happened to me, but they actually got me on a yellow light (i was rushing to make it through, before it turned red). i should have fought it; as running a yellow light isn't illegal. anyway, good article - definitely helpful if this happens to me again (hope not!)
