The number of people with sleep apnea grows every year. Here are some suggestions to help mild cases of the condition. For more serious versions, consult your doctor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Reduce your weight 5 to 10 lbs. Extra weight can obstruct your breathing while you sleep.

  2. Step 2

Avoid drugs and alcohol. Both slow your respiratory system, which can produce sleep apnea.

  3. Step 3

Avoid sleeping on your back. In this position, your tongue may fall back into your airways, creating an obstruction.

  4. Step 4

Try the flower remedy called vervain. Organic herb stores carry this in dry herb form and it can be made into a tea. The herb promotes relaxation and has a calming effect.

  5. Step 5

Using a few pillows to elevate your head so as to not lay flat. Try those pillows that are designed with a hole in the middle. The base of your head rests in the hole and this keeps your airways open.

  6. Step 6

Try 5-HTP. This is amino acid raises serotonin levels in the brain to relax you.

on 7/7/2009 I was having trouble sleeping at night and the dentist sugguested I use a mouth guard as I grind my teeth as well. An unexpected benefit of the mouth guard was I can now sleep on my back as I can breathe better. I guess the guard places my jaw better so I breathe better too! This might be an idea to try if you are suffering from sleep apnea.
