How to Speed Up Windows XP

Few things are more frustrating than fighting the temptation to take a nap while you boot your PC. Massive programs and other features that hog vital space on your hard drive can cause Windows XP to boot and run slowly on your PC. There is hope, though, You can successfully speed up Windows XP by following a few simple steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Disable Unneeded Programs That Slow Down Boot Time

Step1
Go to the “Start” tab.
Step2
Highlight and click on “Run.”
Step3
Type “MSCONFIG” into the text box. This will access “System Configuration Utility.”
Step4
Select the “Services” tab and choose to “Hide All Microsoft Services.”
Step5
Uncheck any programs you neither recognize nor find necessary.
Step6
Choose the “Startup” tab and repeat Step 5.
Step7
Click “Apply” and reboot your computer when done.

Alter Your Folder Settings to Speed Up Windows XP Performance

Step1
Go to “My Computer.”
Step2
Select “Tools” and “Folder Options.”
Step3
Open the “View” tab.
Step4
Uncheck and Check these options:

Uncheck “Automatically Search for Network Folders and Printers." Check “Launch Folder Windows in a Separate Process” and “Do Not Cache" Thumbnails.

Speed Up Windows XP by Disabling Sounds

Step1
Go to the “Start” tab.
Step2
Choose “Settings.”
Step3
Open the “Control Panel.”
Step4
Select “Sounds and Audio Devices.”
Step5
Open the “Sounds” tab.
Step6
Opt for “No Sounds” under the Sound Scheme.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you lose sound completely while trying to disable sounds, then simply undo the changes.
  • This advice will in no way delete necessary files or programs. Neither will it negatively affect the way Windows XP works on your PC.
