Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Familiarize yourself with the magazine you'd like to submit to. This will help you understand the publication's style and ensure that you don't submit something inappropriate for that magazine.
Step2
Have a solid plan for what you plan to write. This means being able to briefly explain your idea to the editor and let him or her know who you plan to interview (if appropriate) and how you plan to tell the story.
Step3
Research the magazine's writer's guidelines before submitting. Nearly every magazine has them and they are usually posted on their website. This will inform you of such things as desired word count, style, specifics on what they're looking for and which areas of the magazine are open to freelancers.
Step4
Submit your query or finished piece to either the magazine's senior editor, articles editor or managing editor. Any of these are a safe bet if the writer's guidelines don't specify.
Step5
Find out how the magazine wishes to be contacted. Some prefer email and others still prefer snail mail. If sending your story or query in the mail, include an SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) for a reply.
Step6
Write a great query letter if you are submitting an idea rather than a pre-written piece. Then give the editor a few weeks to respond. If you haven't heard back in three weeks, it is customary to send a gentle email inquiring about your idea. Don't call the magazine.
