Things You'll Need:
- A city map
- Day passes for public transport (called "passports")
-
Step 1
Decide what type of activities you want to plan for your family. San Francisco has world class museums, galleries, entertainment and shopping so planning a day for each is not a bad idea.
-
Step 2
Look at the entertainment guides for tourists and locals. While the tourist brochures in the hotels will immediately shuffle you off to Pier 39 (a place no local ever goes,) you might want to consider picking up a copy of the "Bay Guardian" or the "SF Weekly" to see what the folks who live in the city are up to.
-
Step 3
Some of the better family attractions include the Exploratorium, Golden Gate Park and the Museum of Modern Art. Neighborhoods like Chinatown and Pacific Heights offer great shopping and restaurants that aren't normally found in the brochures.
-
Step 4
For an active clan, try renting bikes and riding across the Golden Gate Bridge for an unforgettable family adventure. It's an easy ride, for all levels of fitness and you can take a ferry back across so it isn't too strenuous.
