How to Spread Some Good Vibes.

In today's fast paced world we can loose track of time and get bogged down in the negative aspects of life. But a few simple gestures can make a difference. Making others feel good also has the potential to reduce your stress level.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A willingness to make someone else feel good for a moment.

Step1
Check your email address list for people you haven't written to in a while and send them each a "just wanted to say hi" email. Sometimes we loose touch with people without intending to. A simple email like this comes across more personal than a forwarded email sent to them and 9 other people because if you didn't send it to 10 people within 5 minutes then "something bad would happen." An email like this sent any time other than Christmas or their birthday is even better.
Step2
If you work in an office environment you can send a quick thank you email to one of the people in the often thankless departments in your company, like Telecom, Maintenance, or I.T. Granted fixing problems is considered "part of their job", but a simple Thank you email is free and may even get you better service in the long run. Although expecting better service shouldn't be the sole reason for sending the email.
Step3
Give a better than average tip to a waiter or waitress. Obviously you wouldn't do this if they were blatantly rude. But if they did a good job then a better than average tip can brighten their night. If budget is a concern then maybe make a small sacrifice in your order. Get the cup of soup instead of the bowl, order the $20 bottle of wine instead of the $30 one, or pass on that after dinner coffee. If you use the savings towards the tip then your wallet wont feel the difference but the wait staff will.
Step4
Don't wait for a funeral to write the equivalent of a eulogy for someone. Ever notice how often people have kind words to say about someone after they pass away but you never heard half as many compliments while the person was alive? Pick one, or more, random people and imagine what you would say about them. If you are superstitious you can think of it more as a speech for an awards dinner rather than a living eulogy. Whether or not you ever share it with them is up to you, but just going through the process is likely to add quality to your relationship with them.
Step5
Give your mail or newspaper carrier a thank you note. Again, delivering these is "their job" but how little do you have to go out of your way to get a card and write a quick note in it like "thanks for your consistent hard work ... you make it look easy." And you don't even have to use a stamp.
Step6
I know there are many more ways people can spread good vibes, that don't have to be expensive, but I'll let you add to the list.

Tips & Warnings

  • For the most sincerity, try not to do one of these immediately before asking a favor of the person.

on 1/24/2008 I loved your advice. I can't stand those forwards if people don't write personal emails. Trying to tip more definitely spreads goodwill. These will all work, thanks!
