Purchasing a used car has become a much more viable option for those in need of affordable transportation. Because a number of dealers are holding to a stricter set of standards, it has become fairly easy for consumers to find used cars while avoiding the risk of getting a lemon.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Visit a new car dealer. New car dealers generally have a good supply of vehicles they have accepted as trade-ins from new car buyers. As a result, they're bound to have a broad selection of cars to choose from. Additionally, new car dealers tend to do a much better job of reconditioning vehicles they receive for trade. This means a higher quality used car for you, the consumer. If you're unable to find a used vehicle this way then proceed to Step 2.
Step2
Go to a used car superstore. A used car superstore is like a supermarket for cars. You'll find used cars of just about every make and model. A good superstore will have at least 400 to 500 vehicles in their inventory. Most of these used cars will have been acquired from auctions that are geared toward car dealers. The vehicles at used car superstores also typically provide warranty coverage that is comparable what's offered by new car dealers. If you're unable to find a car this way, then proceed to Step 3.
Step3
Stop by a car auction in your area. Car auctions are likely to have prices much lower than dealerships. However, if you win the vehicle, you have to take it as is. Be sure you know what kind of vehicles are being offered as some auctions may deal only with newer vehicles while others may deal with later models. If this is not a viable option for you, then proceed to Step 4.
Step4
Find used cars offered by private owners. Private owners tend to offer more reasonable prices that are also more consistent with book values. Additionally, you have he privilege of dealing directly with the owner and asking about the car's history as well as other pertinent details such as the vehicle's registration and title.. The only drawback is that this option would be time consuming if you want to look at several vehicles through private owners.
