Whether for aesthetic or practical reasons, installing handrails outside is an easy task for any do-it-yourself homeowner. Wooden handrails, if properly treated, can last for several years and provide a beautiful, natural addition to the outside of your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4x4 posts
  • Speed square
  • Measuring tape
  • Hammer or nailgun or screw gun
  • Nails or screws
  • String
  • Wooden stakes
  • Level
  • 2"x4"x8" boards
  • Skill-Saw
  • Post-hole diggers
  • Line level
  • Cement
  • Pencil
  • Paint (Desired color)
  • Paint brush
  1. Step 1

Set two wooden stakes into the ground where you want the railing to start and stop.

  2. Step 2

Tie the string from one stake to another, and make sure it is tight. This will be your straight line.

  3. Step 3

Measure the distance between the stakes and determine how many posts you will need for the length. Typically the posts will be anywhere from 4 to 5 feet apart.

  4. Step 4

After measuring where you want the posts dig the hole with the post-hole diggers. Dig into the ground about 3 to 4 feet.

  5. Step 5

Place the posts (4'x 4'x 8") into the ground.

  6. Step 6

Level the posts and pour the mixed cement into the holes.

  7. Step 7

Adjust the level of the poles before the cement dries. Wait until the cement dries for the next step.

  8. Step 8

Measure how high you want the railing to be on the first pole and make a mark with your pencil.

  9. Step 9

Cut the first pole where you made your mark.

  10. Step 10

Hammer in a nail halfway in the wood on top of the first pole.

  11. Step 11

Tie the string around the nail on the first pole and run it to your last pole with the string level on the string to make sure the surface of your wooden hand railing is level.

  12. Step 12

Make a mark on the last pole and hammer in a nail half way into the wood at the mark.

  13. Step 13

Tie the string on the nail and then mark the rest of the poles in the middle.

  14. Step 14

Pull out the two nails and cut the poles where the mark is.

  15. Step 15

Measure your 2x4 for the railing so that they will fit nicely on top of the poles.

  16. Step 16

Hammer the 2x4 into the poles.

  17. Step 17

Paint your railing to the desired stain or color.
