How to Avoid Getting Sick

There mere thought of getting sick can bring symptoms of a head cold. It's miserable. You have no energy to do anything. Work, errands, chores all of sudden become huge burdens, obstacles on the rode to recovery. But before we're bed-ridden, we know it's coming. The imminent congestion or fever or cold begins to reveal itself a day or two in advance. It starts with some soreness, maybe a fog washes over you. Maybe it's just the slightest tickle in your throat. Before you succumb, bolster your immune system and stave off those pesky germs before they really hit hard.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Rest
  • Water
  • Vitamin C
  • Cold medicine
  • Tea

Step1
Drink a lot of water. If you feel the onset of a cold start drinking water immediately. Dehydration weakens the body's ability to fight infection.
Step2
Take more than the recommended dose of Vitamin C. Try taking a stack in the morning of 1,000 mg Vitamin C pill, washed down with a tall glass of orange juice, and then take a Vitamin C/multi-vitamin solution such as Airborne.
Step3
Continue to to drink the orange juice and multi-vitamin throughout the day, approximately every three to four hours.
Step4
Eat healthy food: fruits and uncooked or steamed vegetables and a small portion of protein. The natural sugar in fruit and the protein (meat, chicken) offer energy during the day, while the vegetables can be great antioxidants.
Step5
Rest. Since you're not yet ill, you're probably having to go work, school, take care of the kids, or whatever full-time task you may have. That leaves little rest for the weary. Take a short nap during the day if you can. Most importantly, don't overly exert yourself, physically and mentally, if you can manage it.
Step6
Make tea. Chamomile is a good, simple tea to drink if you're getting sick. It's a mild sedative and helps stomach ailments, too.
Step7
Steam your head. Turn the shower on as hot as it will go until steam forms. Stick your face in thickest clouds of steam and breathe in slowly. This helps as a decongestant, but is also soothing when general grogginess is the problem. It opens the pours and makes you feel healthier.
Step8
Take cold medicine (if your symptoms have increased during the day) and go to bed early. Even if you're not tired, force yourself to lie down. Your body should be exhausted enough to sleep, even if you don't feel entirely ill.

Tips & Warnings

  • While you're boiling the water for you tea, you can use that steam as a good substitute for the shower.
  • Treat the early stages just as you would the actual illness.
  • Avoid taking cold medicine if you really don't need it. Taking it constantly reduces its effectiveness.
