Step1
Get acquainted with the campus. Figure out the fastest way to get from your dorm to your classes by trying different routes. Know the locations around the campus to get food: cafeteria, The Cabaret and various snack locations in the academic buildings.
Step2
Take advantage of the walking opportunities around campus. Directly across the street, within reasonable walking distance, is Quiznos, Applebee’s, McDonald’s, Home Depot, Staples, Starbucks, Supercuts, Eckerd and even Palace Diner. Explore as much as you can on foot.
Make use of Marist’s bus shuttle to the Poughkeepsie Galleria, should you need to run to the mall for anything. Cabs to restaurants and parties are often fairly cheap if you go in with friends, too.
Once you have access to a car, take a ride up to the Vanderbilt Mansion on a nice day and check out other vantage points along the Hudson.
Step3
See movies cheaper. Become acquainted with the Roosevelt movie theater, up the road in Hyde Park. Giving a student discount to Marist students, this already cheap theater discounts prices even further one night during the week. Traveling south, you can find another cheap movie theater inside the South Hills Mall (directly next to the Poughkeepsie Galleria). These movies are often shown much later then they originally came out, but you never pay over $2.
Step4
Support the Red Foxes. Sporting events at Marist are always lively, and even those that are not die-hard sports fanatics can have a good time. Plus, you can often find Shooter, the Red Fox, at most of the men’s and women’s basketball games, and he’s always up for taking pictures with the crowd.
Step5
Become acquainted with Student Activities. They run lots of trips to the city to see Broadway shows at discounted prices, in addition to various on-campus events that are often fairly cheap or free. Some past on-campus entertainment that Marist has sponsored includes: Dane Cook, Lewis Black, Steven Lynch, Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, Busta Rhymes, and Michelle Branch.
Step6
Know how to work the priority points system, to ensure that you don’t get kicked off campus for any reason. Join a decent amount of clubs (or at least sign in to a decent amount of meetings) to get the credit. And most of all: don’t drink yourself into oblivion so that security has to come and reprimand you; this will definitely lose you points.
