Geneological Documentation or a family roll number that may have been passed down from the family.
Depending on the Tribe maybe a certain census from a certain year.
Step1
Do genealogy documenting if neither parent is tribally enrolled.
Step2
If you aren't native by blood, you cannot be enrolled by a tribe. However there are rare circumstances where individuals are adopted by enrolled tribal members. This is a very personal process. This is something that one cannot expect to have done. (A lot of tribes do not practice this.)
Step3
Some tribes require that your blood quantum be at least half. This is proven through genealogy and or contacting the Tribal Enrollment Office to see if there is family of yours on the rolls.
Step4
Some Tribes require only that you be descended from someone on a certain roll such as the Oklahoma Cherokee Dawes Roll. Another requirement maybe that you are descended from a person on a certain final census that was taken of the tribe such as the 1910 Narragansett Census.

This is very interesting! It is amazing to think that I, a Jewish-Russian by decent, American by birth could become a member of the Lakotah tribe! This IS a great country!
