It is a sad fact of life that bad things happen to people every day. Many of us go to extremes to be safe in our homes and to protect our cars and possessions. We don't always think about our personal safety at work though. Now is a good time to assess the situation and make some positive changes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A floor plan
  • a hand truck
  1. Step 1

Evaluate the layout of your office, including the location of windows and doors. Make a paper floor plan with cut-out furniture. Move things around to evaluate potential arrangements. In every case, make certain you can get out quickly.

  2. Step 2

Size up your furniture. If you have only a desk and a chair, you should be able to arrange them to give yourself access to the door. If you have modular pieces that fit together in a particular way with overhead bins, you might need some outside assistance to figure it out.

  3. Step 3

Move non-essential pieces out of your office. For instance, if you don't need file cabinets right there, move them to a storage room.

  4. Step 4

Arrange your furniture to create an open pathway to exit. Do not trap yourself behind your desk.

  5. Step 5

If possible, keep a piece of furniture between you and others. Make it difficult for someone to grab you.

on 11/28/2008 Thanks for the tips very helpful. Another great idea is to have a Tele-spy Intruder alert phone to know when someone is in your office when your not.
