Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
Step1
Come up with a name. Whether it’s for a business or a blog, you have to come up with that snappy moniker. Before you lock anything in, be sure a web address is available for the name. Begin by entering the name into your browser to see if something comes up.
Step2
Find an address leasing site. There are plenty of these companies out there. Go Daddy, Network Solutions and register.com are just a few. Go to one of these sites and enter the name you’re hoping for to find out if it’s available. In most cases if the “.com” of your name isn’t open, the company will show you other domains that are for the taking. With the growth of the Internet new domains are being added all of the time. Consider not only .net and .org, but new additions like .biz or .info. Another, .mobi, is an option but concentrates on use with mobile devices.
Step3
Purchase your domain name. The registering site will offer other services as well which you should consider. How many emails would you like out of your domain? This will allow you to receive mail at this domain. You will likely want to purchase hosting services as well. This means the company will also post your website on the Internet once you design it. The company may also design websites.
Step4
Tell everyone! Once your website is developed, let people know. Even if you only have your email account activated, tell prospective clients or friends to get them familiar with your domain.
