How to Remove Self Adhesive Shelf Liner ie: MacTac/Contact Paper

This is by far the easiest and least frustrating method I have ever tried to remove self adhesive shelf liner. Takes what was once a tedious and frustrating job and turns into one of relative ease and quick results.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Heat Gun
  • Putty Knife or Scraper
  • Safety Glasses
Step1
Put on your safety glasses :)
Put on your safety gloves (recommended) Gloves can be very hard to work in, but should be worn as a precaution.
Step2
Take your heat gun and set the temperature in the lower mid range for starters. You don't want it so hot as to burn the surface underneath the shelf liner you are removing. You can adjust the heat accordingly as you progress with the job and get a feel for what temperature works for you. Concentrate the heat gun on a small area and you will begin to see the liner softening and lifting and/or bubbling. When this occurs, turn off the heat gun and begin scraping the old liner with your putty knife. It will almost always slide off quite easily, however at this point, you will more than likely need to get your hands involved at pulling the old, scraped liner off the surface.
Step3
Continue on in this manner taking it section by section until your job is complete. Although this is a very efficient way to remove self adhesive shelf liners, you must use caution at all times - please.

Tips & Warnings

  • Please remember that heat guns are capable of generating extreme heat!!
  • Never point the heat gun toward yourself or anyone else in the vicinity
  • Make sure to switch the heat gun OFF when you're ready to pick up the putty knife and begin scraping. Set your heat gun on a flat surface bottom side down. Some heat guns have a "fan only" setting that should be used in between heating the shelf liner and scraping with putty knife.
  • The old liner you are removing gets quite hot and you can burn your fingers if you opt not to wear safety gloves. If you need to assist with your fingers during this job, make sure to let the shelf liner cool a bit before touching it.
