Step1
Want to be included in "Don't Try This at Home?" Learn how to contort your body or perform tricky stunts. Develop your skills and remember the odder your trick, the better.
Step2
Have you got the star quality to appear on the "Does This Impress Ed Asner"? Whether it's juggling plastic bags or belting out the high notes, nurture your talent and you could soon be appearing on the show.
Step3
Does your dog do the hula, your teenager do a perfect impression of Elvis or can your cat open a fridge? If your children or pets have quirky talents or have shown star qualities, they could be included in a "Teenage Wasteland", "Talented Pets" or "Talented Kids" segment.
Step4
Embrace your inner-freak by proudly displaying your weird physical traits to the nation by appearing in "Freaks of Nature"
Step5
Record-breakers are always welcome on the show. Whether you are a record holder or hope to break a record while appearing, production staff are keen to hear from you.
Step6
Feel-good stories of heroism and touching human interest stories are popular with viewers, so if you have an unusual tale to tell, it's well worth applying.
Step7
Quirky and unusual inventions from children and adults often appear on the show with their creators alongside.
Step8
If your elderly relative has developed a unique passion, such as bungee jumping, in their senior years, tell the show about it.
Step9
Develop an unusual musical ability, such as being able to play Beethoven's Fifth using water glasses or your nose. Like all of the other segments, the quirkier the better.
Step10
Whatever your talent, skill or invention, record it using a video camera. Submissions can be made using tape or dvd.
Step11
Label your tape or dvd with your name, address and telephone number. Remember that by submitting this you are giving your permission for it to appear.
Step12
Write a letter that explains your talent or story. Make sure you mention your name, address, telephone number as well as the name of the segment you which to appear in. Choose from: don't try this at home, does this impress Ed Asner, teenage wasteland, talented kids, talented pets, freaks of nature, heroes, human interest stories, kid inventors, adult inventors, remarkable seniors or bizarre musicians.
Step13
Package up your tape and letter and address your parcel to:
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
Attention: SR/JA
3000 W. Alameda Ave
Burbank, CA 91523
Step14
On the outside of your package, be sure to write down which segment you are applying for.
Step15
Online applications are accepted as well! A link to the email application is listed in resources. Remember if you are sending in a video in this way, it must be less than 5mb, so keep it short, sweet and simple. Be sure to include your name, address, telephone number, the name of your segment as well as a short description.
Step16
Before you click 'send' or pop into your post office, make sure you meet the show's requirements. You must be a legal U.S. resident; must be at least 18 years of age; must not be a candidate for public office; must not be or have an immediate family member who is an employee, officer, director, or agent of NBC, NBC Studios, or any of their affiliated companies; must execute waivers and release agreements required by the Program; and must be willing and able to travel to Los Angeles to appear on the Program if requested. All videotapes must be your original work and must not violate the rights of any third party.
Step17
If your clip appears, you will be compensated with $100 in exchange for the rights to the clip.
Step18
If your application impresses the production team, you may be invited to visit the studio. If so, you will be provided with round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, and ground transportation between airport, hotel and studio.
