Sewing kits make great parting gifts or party favors for wedding and bridal shower celebrations, since most of the time these parties are for women. A sewing kit is a helpful item to have in your purse, car or travel bag. Giving something your party guests can actually use is a practical creative idea. Decorating a sewing kit to use as a party favor is simple and fun to do.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scrapbook paper (cardstock and patterned papers)
  • Envelope template
  • Embellishments (brads, eyelets, buttons, ribbon)
  • Stamps and inks
  • Paper trimmer
  • Scissors
  • Craft punch (large)
  • Adhesive
  • Velcro (self sticking)
  1. Step 1

Cut out a cardstock triangle large enough to cover the sewing kit and fold over the outside of the kit. You can also use an envelope template, but make sure you use the right size to cover your sewing kit.

  2. Step 2

Once you have measured your kit and cut out the triangle then fold the paper over your sewing kit so the top and bottom overlap.

  3. Step 3

Unfold the cardstock and decorate the cover using patterned paper and other embellishments as desired.

  4. Step 4

You can use brads or eyelets in the corners to make a creative border around your sewing kit cover.

  5. Step 5

Add some dimension by adding some die cuts or stamped images to the project. Use a stitching stamp to decorate the front of the favor.

  6. Step 6
Velcro used to hold flap closed then ribbon tied around it.

Use Velcro to close the paper cover over the sewing kit at the folds. Then, use a craft punch to make a hole in the top of your cover so the top of the sewing kit can stick through and hold the cover in place (the example kit is in a coin purse so it has a clasp on the top).

  7. Step 7

Cover your sewing kit with your decorated paper cover and make a tag with a message “Sew happy you came”.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a cardstock base so that the paper is heavier and more durable. A lightweight paper would probably tear when used to cover your sewing kit.
  • If you don’t want to use Velcro for your clasp, you can use eyelets at the opening and thread ribbon through the eyelets to tie the cover closed.

on 2/26/2008 I apologize for the confusion. It is supposed to say rectangle (it is a typo that I am correcting now). You can cut a rectangle shape to cover the sewing kit or you can use an envelope template for a fancier cover. Thanks for reading it and letting me know.
