There a few things more satisfying and secure than settling in for winter under a brand new roof. If your roof needs repair or replacement, plenty of area roofing contractors can help you. What do you look for in a new roof? Find out here!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Home that needs a new roof
Step1
Fiberglass or Asphalt Composition: These are the most common form of roofing in country. Fiberglass shingles are a bit thicker than asphalt, so they add texture to the roof and last up to 30 years, about 10 years longer than asphalt. They come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, and mid-range prices run about $2.25 per square foot and up.
Step2
Metal: Metal is lighter than composition roofing, it is extremely fire resistant, comes in a wide variety of colors and types, such as copper, steel, or aluminum, and can be fabricated to look like shingles. Metal roofs also last much longer than other types of roofs and with proper maintenance can last as long as your home. Square-foot costs run about $10.00 per square foot or more.
Step3
Tile: Tile roofing is extremely durable, fire resistant and beautiful. It is also far heavier than other types of roofing, so structures must be specially engineered to hold it. It can be damaged in high winds, because the tiles are more vulnerable to weather extremes and can deteriorate with constant freezing and thawing. Square-foot costs run about $3.50 per square foot or more.
Step4
Slate: Slate is beautiful, durable and costly. It's also quite heavy, so many homes can't take the weight of a slate roof. Prices run from at least $15.00 per square foot. However, there are some new, trendy fiberglass and rubber roofing options that look like slate, but only cost about $7.00 per square foot and up.
Step5
Finding the right roof may take a little homework in the beginning, but it will certainly pay off in the end!
