When weaning your baby from breastmilk, it is important to make the transition gradually. Cow's milk is not recommended for babies under 1 year, so transitioning to formula is necessary. This article can help make this transition easy.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bottles
  • Formula
  • Breast pump (optional)

Step1
Because it is important to make the transition from breastmilk to formula gradually, begin by offering formula mixed in with breastmilk. This is best done using expressed breastmilk.
Step2
Make a bottle up with half formula and half breastmilk. Make the formula using water, not breastmilk otherwise it will be too rich.
Step3
Begin by offering 1 or 2 bottles of this half and half mixture daily. After a few days, gradually add another half and half bottle.
Step4
After your baby has had half and half bottles for at least a week, you can begin to feed them formula-only bottles once or twice a day. Gradually the number of formula-only bottles can be increased.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is possible to feed your baby forumla-only meals, and breastfed meals once you've made the transition to formula.
  • Let your baby be your guide. If she seems to be tolerating the switch well, you can transition more quickly.
  • After introducing formula to your baby, watch carefully for any signs of allergies or intolerance. You may need to switch formula types if you see an adverse reaction. Call your pediatrician if you have questions or concerns.
