Runners who travel for work are often faced with having to keep up their running schedule while on the road. This is sometimes difficult, and I personally have run many miles on hotel treadmills for lack of knowing where to run in an unfamiliar town. But running in new towns is a great way to see places you visit in a way many others would appreciate.

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Concierge or local running contact person
  1. Step 1

Before you travel, log onto a website such as runtheplanet.com or a local parks and recreation website (see Resources below). Websites such as these are built from comments from local runners. Often you can find email addresses of local running clubs, who are generally very helpful to travelers and can even inform you of group runs taking place during your visit. Local running shoe stores can also be a valuable source of information regarding places to run or groups to meet with.

  2. Step 2

Print out a map of the city and locate the running route you have chosen from the website. Write down any contact information you will need when traveling.

  3. Step 3

If staying in a hotel, speak with a concierge. Show him the running route you have selected and ask whether he trusts that it is safe. If you are meeting a group to run, ask for directions. As a safety precaution, let them know when you expect to return.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make your runs casual because you may have to cut them short.
  • Never agree to meet a single person to run with, for safety reason.
  • Remain aware of your surroundings and turn back if you begin to feel unsafe.
