If you don't tighten your snowshoes down enough or if you are breaking trail in particularly deep snow, your snowshoes may loosen up and fall off your feet at the bottom of your step. Read below on how to recover them with minimum aggravation.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Snowshoes
  1. Step 1

If you lose a snowshoe, you will most likely notice right away. Your foot will feel unnaturally light as you lift it out of the snow. If this occurs, look down to confirm that your snowshoe is right below you.

  2. Step 2

Balance your weight over the other side of your body (the foot that still has a snowshoe attached). Get comfortable with your balance, then lightly touch your boot-clad foot down on the deck of your other snowshoe or in the snow right next to it if you can not find your balance.

  3. Step 3

Use one of your poles to fish the rogue snowshoe out of the snow. Try to hook the pole to a hole in the webbing of the snowshoe.

  4. Step 4

Lift the snowshoe out of the snow and set it down in the snow next to you.

  5. Step 5

Stick both poles in the ground close by. Keeping your weight on the other side of your body lightly place your foot down into the snowshoe and do up the straps, wiping off any excess snow to get the strap down as tight as possible.

  6. Step 6

As long as you are stopped, check to ensure that your other snowshoe is on tight as well.
