Once you get comfortable on your Nordic skis, you may feel the need for speed. On traditional Nordic skis, it is possible to get going as fast as 20 mph using a technique called straight-lining.

From Quick Guide: Cross Country Skiing
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skis
  • A hill
  1. Step 1

When you feel yourself starting to pick up speed at the top of the hill, bend your knees and keep your feet and skis parallel to each other. Stay in the track if there is one available.

  2. Step 2

As your speed increases, lean forward and keep a good forward bend in your hips, knees and ankles. This will help you keep your balance.

  3. Step 3

In rough terrain, exaggerate the bend in your knees even more. This will help to absorb the shock of going over bumps and uneven patches.

  4. Step 4

To keep your speed as you are transitioning from the hill to flat ground, use a double-poleing technique.

Tips & Warnings
  • To use this technique successfully, it is key that you feel comfortable with some speed on your skis. Make sure you have had some previous practice and you are able to keep your balance on beginner terrain.
  • Remember to breathe! It will help you keep your balance.
