Step turns are an intermediate to advanced cross-country maneuver. They allow you to turn quickly on variable terrain, but it can be tricky to find your balance at first. It is best to start on reasonably flat terrain and advance to bigger hills as you feel comfortable.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cross-Country Skis
  1. Step 1

Begin by getting comfortable on your skis. Do not use this maneuver immediately, first find your balance and get comfortable with the more basic motions of Nordic skiing such as the diagonal stride.

  2. Step 2

Once you feel comfortable with your balance find a small downhill section of groomed track. Get a bit of speed and then slowly shift your balance slightly over the right side of your body. This leaves your left leg free to maneuver a turn step.

  3. Step 3

Point your hips and head slightly to the left before picking your left leg up and positioning it to the left as well. Follow with your right leg on your next step.

  4. Step 4

After a stride or two in this direction repeat the maneuver on the other side.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you are just starting out use small steps and make small turns to get comfortable with the motion.
  • Keep your balance over the core of your body at all times. Whichever way your hips are facing you should feel like your balance is resting over them.
