Double poling in traditional-style cross-country skiing is a versatile maneuver. It allows tired legs a rest. It provides you with powerful forward momentum. And it strengthens yours arms and your core. Below find the proper technique.

Things You'll Need:

  • Poles
  • Skis
  1. Step 1

    Bring your skis parallel to each other and next to each other about shoulder-width apart.

  2. Step 2

    Assume a limber body position, bent at the knees and waist.

  3. Step 3

    Lean forward from the waist, planting your poles at the middle of the waist of your skis (where your feet clip into the bindings).

  4. Step 4

    Push off both poles, first using the strength of your arms, then the strength of your core.

  5. Step 5

    End bent forward with your poles in the air pointed behind you. Ride the momentum for a moment before repeating the maneuver.
