Sewing on scrapbook pages has become a popular technique. Experienced scrappers use craft sewing machines to create beautiful stitches on their scrapbooking layouts. Hand-stitching on your pages can also add appeal to the layout. It may take some time, but the stitches will create dimension and make an attractive border for photos, journaling or other page elements.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scrapbook paper
  • Embroidery thread
  • Waxy flax
  • Thread
  • Scrapbook fancy fibers
  • Needle
  • Piercing tool
  • Piercing bees
  • 1/18-inch hole punch
  • Ruler
  1. Step 1

Decide where your want to stitch on your layout and how much stitching you will need to do.

  2. Step 2

In order to start stitching you need to make even straight lines which can be done in several ways. One way to create even stitching lines is to use a ruler to measure the lines and mark where you want to stitch with a light pencil line. The ruler method may be time consuming but it will help measure accurate spaces.

  3. Step 3

Another option to getting evenly spaced stitching lines is to use a dotted border stamp. Use stamps that have small lines or dots that are evenly spaced. With border stamps you have a ready-made spacing with no measuring headaches.

  4. Step 4

One more option is to buy piercing tools that will automatically punch small holes in your paper with precise spacing. The “piercing bee” tools can be purchased at many craft supply stores and they are a perfect tool to have if you plan on doing a lot of hand-stitching on your scrapbook pages.

  5. Step 5

Once you have your stitching pattern mapped out on the page then you can thread your needle with the desired thread (waxy flax, embroidery thread, fancy fibers, etc.) and start to stitch.

  6. Step 6

The first step to stitching is to come up with your needle from the back of the paper. You will need to tie a small knot in your thread to stop it from pulling completely through. Then, proceed with your stitching pattern until you have completed the area that you wish to hand-stitch. When you are to the end of the stitching project then you will need to tie off the thread underneath the paper to keep your hard work from unraveling. It is a good idea to make small knots so they can be easily disguised.

  7. Step 7

Finish your layout and add photographs, then slide it into a page protector and display proudly in your scrapbook album.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure holes are not too small or too large for your thread. If the holes are too small then you may rip or damage your paper. If the holes are too large then it may take away from the look of the stitching.
  • Use thread that will accent your page. For example if you are doing a more feminine layout then a glossy embroidery thread will give some sparkle to your scrapbook page and coordinate well with the theme.
  • Be sure to buy a needle that has a large “eye” or “head” (top opening) so you can thread thick fibers through it.
