Yoga as an exercise in flexibility, strength and meditation has spread like wildfire through the states in the last decade. It has grown so rapidly in fact, that it is hard to distinguish between the different styles to find which best fits your mood. Ashtanga, Kundalini, and Hatha, are only a few types of yoga. It is not uncommon to look at a list of these 'hard to pronounce' nouns with a disgruntled face and wonder where to begin. Bikram yoga is a series of twenty-six poses arranged to promote full stretch and stretching of the entire body. The kicker with this series is that is utilizes heat to create the ultimate cleansing tool. This means that the room should never fall under 100 degrees, and you, if you choose to accept the challenge, will not stop sweating for the duration of class.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Yoga mat
  • Two or more towels
  • Bottle of water
  • As skimpy an outfit as you can stand in front of a class of 20. Try a one peice bathing suit with thin leggings over the top.
  • A Bikram class near you
Step1
Entering into a Bikram studio should not be done lightly. This is not to say that you shouldn't be light hearted about the experience, it is only to let you know it is an intense enterprise designed to reawaken every muscle in your body. Be ready for a challenge of body and mind. Leave your shoes outside the yoga room; this is a sign of respect.
Step2
Arrive ten minutes early for your first class. There will be a small amount of paper work and you'll also want to acquaint yourself with the teacher and new surroundings. Find a spot where you have a full view of your body in the mirrors. At first it will seem awkward to stare at yourself for so long but over time it grows comforting and invigorating. Lie down your mat and one of your towels on top to cover the mat.
Step3
Follow the teachers dialogue closely. They will help you tremendously though these first few classes. Try only to drink at the allotted breaks and sit down quietly if you feel you need a break. Remember yoga is a highly concentrated meditation; be courteous and cautious with your movements.
Step4
The class is always challenging especially on your first few visits. Be sure to allow yourself time to relax after class. Allow yourself to move slowly and eat healthy. You have just sweated out toxins and strengthened all your muscle by stretching them. You have done yourself a favor so celebrate!
