Hoosiers are justifiably proud of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The beautiful museum, which recently underwent a massive renovation, is home to priceless works of art and is one of the city’s cultural centers. Its sprawling, landscaped grounds are equally inspiring. It all makes for a perfect setting to learn something new and unleash your creativity. Here’s how to take a class at this important and worthwhile museum.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the museum’s website for a current schedule of adult classes, which generally focus on learning a particular skill. Recent topics have included hat-making, origami, clay mosaics and digital photography. You can sign up online for any of the listed classes (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Do you prefer actual flowers to floral paintings? Sign up for one of the museum’s horticulture classes, often taught in the museum’s sprawling gardens. Recent topics have included working with bamboo and basic pruning techniques.

  3. Step 3

If you have fond memories of your college art history class, check out the museum’s Art Jolt program. These evening lectures focus on artistic styles, particular artists or current events in the art world, such as how to determine the ownership of artworks seized during World War II. Check out the museum’s lecture schedule for other potential topics of interest.

  4. Step 4

Remember that some classes are geared specifically to children and/or teenagers. The museum also offers art camps during school breaks, giving children the chance to explore a variety of artistic pursuits.

  5. Step 5

On the day or evening of your class, head to the museum, at 4000 Michigan Road in Indianapolis. You may park for free in either the surface parking lot or the underground parking garage. If the weather is nice, give yourself time for a stroll around the beautiful grounds before your class begins.
