There are great resources and lots of info into finding what you need.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Look into Global Website NOKR, Next of Kin Registry
This is a website designed to locate next of kin in case of a disaster or an emergency. If you are looking for a Missing Person this may be a great place to start. The data base is secure and global. If you needed to access this information it is best to go to local authorities to access registrations.
Step2
Contacting local resources
Try to contact the hospital or funeral home that they were at to see if any documentation they may have may lead to notification of next to kin. If that leads no where try to contact a court house around their estate to see if a will was left with any information. Look through their Obituary for named persons like Spouse, Parents, Children. If information of such is there you can definitely get information from funeral home. Searching on the internet for trying to find persons of interest may lead to no where and scams. If you do not find resources in named above try Step 3.
Step3
Accessing Information
If unsuccessful through their hometown's courthouse and funeral home that they were taken care of, try to go to local databases for research. Public Records can show marriage certificates, birth records for parents or children, death certificates for any above named. Most public records an be accessed online now but you may need to go to local municiple building to gather information and sometimes public libraries have such information also. You can find most online now though.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember Next of Kin means if they are married Spouse is next of Kin, if Spouse is deceased or they were single either children or parents would be next of kin. After that it would be brothers or sisters. Next of kin is closest living relative, closest meaning down the line of immediate family.

on 4/16/2008 Hey Katie...

Great article! Recently I was looking for some of my family's history and stumbled upon a great website, Ancestry.com . It is a reputable place to locate family info and shows the actual pages of a person's birth record/index!!! It was so very helpful to me...thought it might be another avenue for your readers as well.

Keep up the great writing, and thank you for posting this. Warm Regards...2ndMomma, Vickie
