You have decided to organize an After Prom event for the students at your high school. You have a date and a place to hold the party. You have a theme and great activities you want to offer at the After Prom event. You even have a committee of volunteers that feel the same as you about having a safe, alcohol and drug-free environment where kids can go to enjoy each other's company after the Prom. So now the question is, how can we raise the funds needed for our After Prom event? Here are some sources and ideas.

From Quick Guide: Surviving High School
Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The earlier the fundraising for an After Prom party begins, the more resources you will be able to tap and the more funds you will gather. The start of a school year is a good time to start thinking about this special party that's probably nine months away.

  2. Step 2

Search for grants from local, county or state drug and alcohol councils.

  3. Step 3

Search for grants or donations from community organizations that support local and/or youth causes. This could be local United Ways, Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs or other service organizations.

  4. Step 4

Solicit monetary donations from local churches.

  5. Step 5

Solicit monetary donations from your municipality.

  6. Step 6

Solicit monetary donations from the parents of the students that will be attending, stressing that the donation will be helping to keep their children safe after the Prom. Suggest an actual amount that every parent should donate.

  7. Step 7

Solicit monetary or product donations from the business community.

  8. Step 8

During the school year, have a bucket near the cash registers in the cafeteria. The change the students will drop in those buckets adds up quickly.

  9. Step 9

Ask other organizations and clubs at the high school to assume part of the cost of the After Prom. They can sponsor one of the activities or provide a major door prize.

  10. Step 10

Fundraising takes time and sometimes many reminders. Set a drop-dead date for raising your funds. As the event nears and you still don't have the funds you need, threaten to cancel the event. Many of the procrastinators will send in the money quickly. An alternate method is to begin reducing the size of the event until you have the funds to cover all activities.

Tips & Warnings
  • When soliciting donations, create a letter that specifies your reasons for wanting an After Prom program in the community. Include ideas like Prom and graduation are the two highest risk nights for high school students; After Prom parties provide a safe and alcohol free environment; and the kids will be safe in one location, not driving the roads late at night.
