How to set up an indoor tent

For most parts of the US right now the sun is not very sunny. The only to camp out would be an igloo. What do you do when the kids insist on camping out but the weather does not allow? This is a simple article on how to bring the fun of sleeping in a tent indoors.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Sheets
  • Furniture
  • Heavy weights like phonebooks
  • Clothes pins
Step1
Start by finding a large area. It should have enough space to lay the sleeping bags out on the floor. I have done this with 8 little girls before and it helps to lay the sleeping arrangements out before putting up the tent to make sure there is no one left out.
Step2
Next you will need something tall to prop the sides. You could use chairs, a couch, bar stools, the side of a counter, or anything else sturdy. Be creative here you can really save on supplies if you choose the right things.
Step3
Place sheets on top of whatever you have picked for your side supports. This is where drawers on a dresser come in handy because you can tuck the sheet in and shut the drawer on it. If your support item does not have something to hold the sheet you will need to place something on top of it like a phone book or other heavy object.
Step4
For larger tents use clothes pins in between the sheets to make a larger tent surface. To prop the middle add a broom stick or mop leaning it into the supports and propping the top. If you have an unfinished basement use zip ties to attach the other end of clothes pins to the exposed floor supports.
Step5
At this point the sky is the limit there are all types and sizes to be explored and sometimes “tent setup” is a great game that can keep them busy for hours.

on 3/5/2008 Even as an adult, I love building tents indoors as much as I did when I was little. I just did this recently when my niece slept over. One good method for tent building is to start with the dining room table and drape a large blanket over it. That gives you a sturdy ceiling for the tent that won't fall in. Then you can add rooms and hallways off from the main area. Great article!

on 1/21/2008 Great article - but one piece of warning which unfortunately come from personal experience (about step 3) - when you choose your heavy objects, choose wisely! TVs it would seem, are not quite as heavy as they once were....but still hurt like anything when they come a-tumbling onto your head! As a kid we used to grab hammers and nails (much to dad's upset) and pin them to the walls...fortunately all is forgiven (I think)! Thanks for the tips!

on 1/21/2008 Great joke! It is a crying shame that you never got to set up a tent and you should do it this weekend.
