Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Do a little online research to find out which galleries your favorite artist is affiliated with. Check out their websites and look under the events section to see if your artist has any upcoming exhibitions. Many artists attend their opening receptions, and some even give gallery talks beforehand, which is the perfect opportunity for you to ask any questions you have about their artwork.
Step2
If they do not have any exhibitions coming up, make sure to place yourself on their galleries’ mailing lists. That way, you will receive notifications of upcoming exhibitions.
Step3
Get involved in your local art museum. As a member, not only will you be supporting the arts, you will have the first access to museum event tickets, and usually at a discount rate. If your favorite artist comes to town for a lecture, you can make sure you are first in line for tickets.
Step4
Did your favorite artist write recently write a book or memoir? If so, they will probably be holding book signings in cities throughout the country. Consult the publisher’s website to find out if any are in your area, or make a special trip to an artsy city like New York, to attend a book signing there.
Step5
No matter how you meet your favorite artist, it is important to understand that they are busy people and be respectful of their time, as well as their boundaries. Make sure to thank them for answering any questions you might have asked, and be sure to keep the conversation short and sweet. Whether your encounter with the artist is a brief "hello" at a book signing, or a short chat at a gallery opening, you want it to be a positive experience for both of you.
