Step 1
Make a favor bag or box. Have a box filled with crayons, papers, small toys like action figurines, and other goodies. By giving children something new to distract their attention you’ll keep them out of trouble and happily entertained. Tailor it to the child to ensure engagement.
-
Step 2
Involve the children in dancing. If the event has music and dancing, get the children on the floor. Not only will this keep them engaged, but they’ll wear themselves out in time for bed.
-
Step 3
Create a scavenger hunt. Come up with a list of things you want the children to find during the event. Items on the list can include someone wearing blue, someone from out of town or a number like 17. Make it challenging so that the children will have to apply themselves to the activity and give small prizes to keep them engaged.
-
Step 4
Assign tasks. If you have an instant or digital camera, ask the children to take photos of people and the event. Your children will feel more involved and less likely to get bored and frustrated.
-
Step 5
Engage in conversation. You don’t have to make your children the center of attention, but they shouldn’t be ignored, either. Involve them in conversations and make sure they are attended to.
-
Step 6
Appoint a caretaker for the evening. If you are hosting the event, arrange to have someone organize activities for any children who attend.
