Travelling abroad during college is the best experience you will ever have, so why are so many people too afraid to do it? Most people are afraid they can't pay for it and that it will set them back in getting their degree, but this is NOT TRUE!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Choose a program by location or by Academics. If you know there is ONE place you want to go and only that place then you should find a program through which you can get General education requirements out of the way (it's best to do this early in you schooling i.e. Sophomore year.) If you want to go to study something specific like art find special programs that offer those options (keep in mind they are not available in all locations). You should also decide whether you want to use a program offered directly by your school or if you want to use a private party.
Step2
Research Research Research. The internet is a great source do searches on google or through databases like studyabroad.com. Colleges often have study abroad fairs when several organizations attend and hand out brochures gather as many as you can carry and ask the representatives questions. If you still have questions call the offices of the program you are interested in.
Step3
Talk to an advisor. There should be advisors at your school. Schedule an appointment early and make sure the program you want can transfer credits to your home school. Also talk to your specific academic advisor about courses/activities you should do while abroad to help you in your major.
Step4
Fill out applications early. You can get early bird specials for one thing. For another thing it will give you enough time to set up things through your school, get a passport/visa, and pass health requirements.
Step5
Financially speaking most programs aren't that much more expensive than public education and financial aid and loans can be used to go abroad. Ask your school about specifics. There are also scholarships through the Abroad Programs along with privately funded scholarships and grants for going abroad. Still, make sure you get a summer job to save up spending money.

Tips & Warnings

  • Research the location through travel and city government websites so you know if that location will really suit you.
  • APPLY EARLY and be organized...it will make everything so much easier.

on 1/21/2008 Getting in early will make the difference and having this on a job application or resume will define you as "not afraid of change".
