Purchase an alternate heating source that can be used during a power failure. Alternate heating sources can include a wood heater, fireplace, or kerosene heater. If you choose a wood heater or fireplace, be sure to have a plentiful wood supply before time for winter weather. If you use a kerosene heater or other type gas heater, be sure to have a supply of fuel on-hand. You should always have a fire extinguisher close at hand when using alternate heating sources.
Step2
Create an emergency storm supply kit that includes flashlights, batteries, first-aid kit, snow shovel, rock salt, manual can opener, matches, and extra blankets. When preparing your kit, keep in mind the special needs of your family. For example, if you have a baby, be sure to have an extra supply of diapers. If you have an elderly relative, have an extra supply of adult diapers if these are used.
Step3
Before the approaching storm arrives, purchase a supply of bottled water, foods that do not have to be refrigerated or cooked, and be sure that any prescriptions have been filled.
Step4
Once the storm has arrived, be sure everyone is dressed warmly. If you lose your main source of heat, dress in layers to conserve heat. The extra blankets will also help you to conserve heat. Remember that your alternative heating source may not be able to provide the amount of heat provided by your main heating source; you may have to use it in one or two rooms and close off the rest of the house.
Step5
Monitor the temperature in your home if you have lost power with a thermometer. If you see that the temperatures inside your home are constantly low try to find somewhere to stay for the duration of the storm, especially if there are children or seniors in the home. Go to a shelter or stay with a family member of friend.
Tips & Warnings
Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
Guard children from burning hazards associated with alternate heat sources.
Think family first - possessions can be replaced, family members can't. Don't stay in your home to protect it at the risk of placing your family members in danger of freezing.
