Coronado, which means “crowned one” in Spanish, is a small residential island and tourist destination off the coast of San Diego. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean, San Diego Bay and Glorietta Bay, a laidback atmosphere and spectacular environmental setting have helped Coronado maintain a role as a resort getaway since the late 19th century. The island is easily accessible by ferry or car is great for a day trip or an extended vacation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Catch the ferry from downtown San Diego’s Seaport Village at the Broadway Pier. Departures leave every hour from Broadway Pier at 9:00 a.m., seven days a week. You will arrive at The Ferry Landing Marketplace on Coronado Island in roughly half an hour. Return trips to Seaport Village leave on the half hour. Rates are $3 one-way, $6 roundtrip. You can also access the island by car, driving across the San Diego-Coronado Bridge.

  2. Step 2

Visit the Hotel del Coronado, a National Historic Landmark that opened in 1888 and one of the world’s most beautiful resorts. Its amazing interior and exterior are complemented by spectacular views of the Pacific. A number of presidents and celebrities have stayed at the hotel, including Marilyn Monroe and Babe Ruth.

  3. Step 3

Take part in a full range of recreational activities. Golf on Coronado’s 18-hole golf course, sample one or more of the 19 tennis courts, walk, jog or play in over 20 public parks or bike or rollerblade on a myriad of bike and blade paths.

  4. Step 4

Have a meal on Orange Ave. in the heart of the Coronado Island village. For a pricey dinner, visit Chez Loma French Bistro, the only 4-star restaurant on the island. Visit Coronado Brewing Company for micro brewed beer and American cuisine, Miguel’s Cocina if you enjoy Mexican, Primavera Ristorante for Italian or Alexander’s Pizza for the island’s consistently ranked best pizza.

  5. Step 5

Spend some time at the marketplace. Rent a bike, pick up local maps or buy tourist memorabilia. Swim or go surfing on one of several beaches. You can bring your bicycle to the island for fifty cents extra on each leg of your ticket.
