You have just dumped a whole soda or cup of coffee on your keyboard. Or you have a collection of dust and crumbs that is making your keys stick. Here is how you can clean your keyboard by throwing it into your dishwasher.

      Disconnected the USB keyboard from the computer and dump out the spilled beverage.

      Securely bundle and cover up the USB connector with a plastic bag. Wrap tape around the bag to make sure it doesn't come apart.

      Place keyboard in dishwasher - normal cycle. Put in dishwasher soap.

      Run the dishwasher through it's cycle BUT make sure you take the keyboard out before the heated dry cycle. Set your oven timer to remind you.

      Popp ALL the keys off to allow the keyboard to completely dry. Make sure you either draw, write down, or take a picture of the keyboard so that you know how to put them back in the right place.

      If you did not spill but just want to clean the crumbs and dust from your keyboard, you can take off the keys before and put the keys in the utensil basket. You can use a quarter to help you pop the keys off.

      Lean your keyboard vertically against a wall and allowed it to at least dry over night. There is different opinions on how long you should let your keyboard dry from 2 to 5 days. You can also set you keyboard outside to dry in the sun for a while, just don't forget about it.

      Replaced all the keys, by following your notes and plug the keyboard back in.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many people will use this method to give their keyboard a thorough cleaning.

  • Some people use some dish washing soap, but it is not necessary.

  • Take out before dry cycle.

    It can be scary idea. This is not recommended for Blu Tooth keyboards. Soap is not mandatory and you can also clean it without soap. You might prefer cleaning the keyboard the "dry cleaning" way by taking the keys off. You can find out how by reading "How to clean a mac keyboard."

    Ouch I am not sure I would have the guts to give this a try. I think that you would have to be very picky on the type of soap or it may leave a film.
