When it comes to discounts, senior status can arrive as soon as you blow out that 50th candle. Money-saving gets more abundant with age for many areas of your life.
Traveling by train? Amtrak offers a 15 percent discount to those 62 and older.
Step2
Taking to the skies? Nearly every airline has senior discounts but no two are the same. Age requirements may vary between 55 and 62 and discounts range from 10 percent off a regular fare to club discounts, membership-affiliated discounts and discounted senior vacation packages.
Step3
Always ask about senior discounts when renting a car. Discounts range from 5 percent to 15 percent, with age requirements beginning at 50 years. Some honor these discounts through membership with AARP (American Association for Retired Persons) or NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees.)
Step4
Bus travelers also reap senior discounts with Greyhound. An annual $5.00 fee is required.
Step5
Many of America’s National Parks offer senior discounts. Some require a yearly fee for discounted camping, hiking and park fees.
Step6
Consider joining AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) for all the discounts associated with that organization. You do not even have to be retired to join; you only need to be 50 years or older.
Tips & Warnings
Always inquire about senior discounts at hotels, stores, restaurants, movie theaters, recreation arenas, pharmacies, educational institutions and banks. They are not always advertised, so ask.
