Step1
Quit Smoking FOR GOOD!
7 Tips on how to quit smoking cold turkey
My goal is to provide you with information that will help you become a non smoker for life! Alright, so let’s get started!
Step2
1. Write down your “Why Factor”
The most important tip I can give you is a thing I like to call the “Why Factor”. Ask yourself, “Why am I motivated to quit smoking?”
Now this could be, to be healthier, to provide a better environment for children, to breathe easily, to save money, and the list goes on. If your Why Factor isn’t strong you won’t stick to it.
For example, have you ever set a goal to do something and never stuck to it? I’m sure most people have, I know I have.
Why is it sometimes we stick to our goal and other times we don’t? It’s because of the reason behind it. If the reason to quit smoking is strong and you truly believe it, you are much more likely to become a non smoker.
Write down your Why Factor and keep it on you where your cigarettes normally are. An example could be, “I am going to become a non smoker because ………”
Your reasons are very powerful! Different people have different reasons for quitting. Therefore it’s important to write your individual reasons.
When considering your reasons, ensure they’re not based on pressure from family/co-workers or friends because this makes you less likely to stick to your reasons. YOU have to want to quit smoking yourself, not based on other people’s opinions.
To help you write down your own reasons, here are some common reasons people choose to quit smoking:
-Be healthier
-Live longer
-Provide a better environment for my family
-To prevent sicknesses
-To breathe easily
-To slow, stop or reverse aging
-To save money
-To stop pressure from others to quit
-The smell of cigarettes
-To stop being controlled by cigarettes
-To get rid of the inconvenience of smoking
Step3
2. Get rid of your cigarettes.
If you carry cigarettes you’re encouraged to have one just because they are there. It is important to dispose of your cigarettes and lighter to ensure you don’t let it persuade you.
Step4
3. Put the money you would normally spend on cigarettes in a jar.
This is a very powerful strategy; many smokers don’t sit down and figure out how much they’re actually spending on cigarettes per year. When you literally see the money saved that you would normally have spent on cigarettes, you are more likely to stay motivated.
Now with that money you’ve saved, reward yourself for being a non smoker!
Step5
4. Tell people that you have quit.
When you tell people that you have already quit it’s very powerful. When people say “I’m trying to quit smoking” it isn’t as powerful.
When people say they’re trying to quit that gives them the reason to say, “Well it didn’t work, but I tried!”
With my clients I use a pen to demonstrate this point. I hold out my hand with the pen resting on top. I say “try and take the pen from my hand”, when they take it, I say “No, don’t take the pen, I said try to take the pen”
“See you either take the pen, or you don’t take the pen – there is no try” So when people say “I’m trying to quit smoking” they’re already pre-setting themselves to fail.
Step6
5. Be proud to be a non smoker
The “Why Factor” helps a lot with this. When humans achieve goals we’re proud even though we don’t always admit it. So when you know you’ve quit smoking because of your Why Factor, make sure you’re proud of it – reward yourself with the jar of money you have saved!
Step7
6. Change your behaviours when you normally have a cigarette.
You might have a cigarette when you wake up, or get in the car, or have a cup of coffee, after a meal or when you’re stressed.
When you, for example, wake up in the morning, replace the cigarette with a glass of water. So instead of having a cigarette, have a glass of water or a piece of fruit.
Have you ever gone to light up a cigarettes and then 15-30 minutes later you realised you didn’t actually smoke that cigarette? Well that’s because you changed your behaviour. You did something else to distract you from the cigarette.
So when the urges are there change your behaviour, stand up and go for a walk or go talk to someone – anything just as long as you’re distracted from a cigarette.
Step8
7. Never EVER smoke a cigarette again.
Now that seems really obvious right? What I mean by this is there is one way to stop smoking, do you want to know what that is? Never ever smoke a cigarette again! Sometimes what will happen is people will think “Oh, I’ll just have one – then they end up smoking again! Even if they’ve quit for years!” So you can never ever, take a puff a drag or a draw from a cigarette, ever again!
I understand this all takes will power. Some people have more will power than others. The stronger your Why Factor is the more likely you will stick to your goal. The problem with will power is you have to remember to do it.
The mind has two parts, the conscious mind and the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is where the habits are stored. These are the things you do without even thinking about it – for example walking, breathing, blinking etc.
Have you ever really wanted to quit smoking, but never ended up quitting? Well that’s because you didn’t get it into the unconscious mind. When you get into the unconscious mind and change the behaviours, that is when things change.
This is known as hypnosis. With hypnosis it is possible to talk directly to the unconscious mind, with the person’s permission of course, and get instant results.
