Link is one of the most popular characters in Nintendo history, as well as in Super Smash Bros. Melee. He’s a little heavier than he looks, but he’s power hitter with decent speed and middle of the road range. Use his versatility to overcome all situations.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Nintendo GameCube or Nintendo Wii
  • A copy of Super Smash Bros. Melee.

    Basics

  1. Step 1

Most of his best attacks come from the A button, despite the fact that they may seem weaker than some of his special moves. Go into training and familiarize yourself with all of his normal A button moves. This goes beyond just his smash attacks. You’ll need to know how to use these moves both offensively, defensively and in the air as well.

  2. Step 2

Learn how to lay on the damage while knocking your opponent away from you. A lot of Link’s attacks have great knock back potential, so you can keep an opponent at bay fairly easily in a few hits.

  3. Step 3

Link’s Tornado Spin hits on both sides of him, and knocks enemies away pretty far. It’s a great offensive and defensive move, but don’t spam it too much or it’ll leave you open.

  4. Step 4

You can use Link’s relatively weak ranged attacks to interrupt your opponent when they have their sights on you, and to chink away at their damage rating before you slug them out of the arena.

  5. Advanced moves

  6. Step 1

On smash attacks, it’s the last hit of his three hit combos that really count. You may miss with the other two, but nail that last big swing for the real damage.

  7. Step 2

His shield can deflect most projectiles if you don’t press anything. So long as the projectile touches the shield, and not Link’s feet or head, it’ll just bounce off harmlessly. You can also do this while crouched.

  8. Step 3

Link’s hookshot throw can latch on to the edges of the arena. You can use this as a last ditch move to get back into the ring.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don’t forget to use the moves that come from slightly angling the control stick in various directions as well. They may look similar to his smash attacks, but they are much faster and don’t telegraph as much, making them essential to learn.
  • Link is in the medium weight class, but gravity pulls him down like a heavyweight. Be careful of this when jumping across platforms.
