How to Speed Up Windows When You Open My Computer

If your Windows XP PC slows down when you OPEN "My Computer", but seems to respond good most other times, this is a simple tip that will speed things up. Especially useful if you have several "mapped drives".

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Windows XP PC

Step1
Open Folder Options From My Computer Select the "Tools" Menu option from the top menu bar, then select "Folder Options".
Step2
Choose the "View Tab" from the Folder Options Window
Step3
Un-Check the Search... Uncheck the box for "Automatically search for network folders and printers", and close the dialog.
Step4
Thats it, the change should be immediate so when you open "my COmputer" your PC should now show the list of files and folders quickly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Really simple trick to speed things up if you have several network drives, or multiple printers.
  • This setting should have NO adverse effects, but can always be change back.
