UPDATE! Hold both buttons and count to ten. Then release the top button and count to ten again. This should get rid of "Unknown Error (1)" or "Unknown Error (5) The errors occur because of poor timing. Sorry if my tutorial was unclear. Curses be to Apple! You are not the only one who has reported this, I had this problem as well, and to be honest, I can't recall how I got around it. But I'll try to help you.
What version is your iTunes? Are you using a Mac or PC?
Try this: completely exit out of iTunes before you put the iPod into DFU mode, then once it's in DFU mode, connect it.
Let me know how this works, I have a few more methods to try. Sorry that this isn't going as planned, I'll research this.
