UPDATE! Hold both buttons and count to ten. Then release the top button and count to ten again. This should get rid of "Unknown Error (1)" or "Unknown Error (5) The errors occur because of poor timing. Sorry if my tutorial was unclear. Curses be to Apple! They have just tricked you into their Jailbroken-less firmware and you're stuck, well never fear, in this article, I'll show you how to simply get back to firmware 1.1.1 and rejailbreak your iPod without using iPhuc If any of my articles have aided you, please help me out and simply click my referral link. Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
To do this, first have the firmware 1.1.1 to your desktop, download it here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V7H8X2QQ
Step2
Now, put your iPod in DFU mode. Connect the iPod to iTunes. Hold down both the top button and home button (the round one). When the "Slide to power off" slider appears, just ignore it. When you get to the Apple sign, release the top button but still hold the home button until your iPod reconnects to iTunes. Once it appears in iTunes, release all buttons.
Step3
Once you're in recovery mode, you'll only have one option in iTunes, "restore". Option click (Macs) or Shift-click (PCs) "Restore" and grab the 1.1.1 Firmware on your desktop. Let it download and continue onto Jailbreaking your iPod touch!

on 2/13/2008 "Why am i still unable to restore my itouch on 1.1.1 when following all these steps, it works fine until i attempt to restore my itouch through itunes and then aborts the process and states that 'Unknown error occured'."
You are not the only one who has reported this, I had this problem as well, and to be honest, I can't recall how I got around it. But I'll try to help you.

What version is your iTunes? Are you using a Mac or PC?
Try this: completely exit out of iTunes before you put the iPod into DFU mode, then once it's in DFU mode, connect it.

Let me know how this works, I have a few more methods to try. Sorry that this isn't going as planned, I'll research this.
