How to Survive HDTV

In February, 2009, all major television stations will broadcast in HDTV only. This means traditional analog TV signals will no longer be available. And televisions without HDTV capability will no longer be functional. There are several ways to prepare for the conversion from analog to digital broadcasting.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Television with digital capability OR television with digital converter box.

Step1
Check all of your existing televisions for high-definition (or HD) capabilities. HD sets are clearly labelled as "HD" or "HD ready". If you have a set that is NOT marked "HD", it is most likely an analog receiver and will probably require a digital converter box.
Step2
If you subscribe to cable, satellite, or other paid television service, then your company has or can provide the necessary digital tuner. However, an HD television is still necessary to receive AND view high definition images.
Step3
If you do NOT subscribe to any paid television service (and watch only broadcast television), then you will need either an HDTV or a digitial converter box and a non-HDTV.

Tips & Warnings

  • The cost of a digital converter box may be offset or even free with a $40 coupon from the federal government.
  • A flat-screen TV may or may not be an HDTV. Check your owner's manual.
  • Even if you subscribe to a paid TV service (cable, satellite) etc., and they provide a digital tuner, you may want to purchase a digital converter box. In the event of an emergency such as an earthquake, flood, hurricane, etc., you may still be able to get emergency information via a battery-operated TV and a digital converter box.
