Typically called a Collision Damage Waiver, or additional liability coverage.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Auto Policy
  • Pre-Verify with Insurance agent
  1. Step 1

Call your insurance agent and verify that you are covered while renting a rental truck with a rental agency such as Uhaul, Penske, or Budget.

  2. Step 2

Ask if you are covered for theft or vandalism. Rental agencies do not offer the coverage. Request the coverage for the rental period.

  3. Step 3

Purchase the CDW or liability coverage if cost effective at the rental location. Your insurance carrier will have a deductible to consider if you have a damage claim. Rental agencies charge little to none on the deductible. This outweighs the cost of your own insurance in some instances. Consider that your insurance company will also increase your premiums with a claim.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most major credit cards cover car rentals, not commercial truck rentals. Be aware of this.
  • Ask your agent to confirm that they will cover you in the event of a claim. Specifically ask them if it matters whether or not the truck has 4 or 6 wheels. It does matter.
