Get familiar with Wal-mart or Sam's Club by visiting several branches. Work out where your product will fit on their shelves and how it will sit with the competition. Wal-mart aims to get the best prices for their customers, so how low will you be able to sell for in return for large purchase orders?

If you are looking to market books, magazines, video, dvds or cds, you should get in touch with Anderson Merchandisers on 1-800-999-0904. They will be able to discuss the special process involved for this area.

If you only want to supply merchandise within 5 Wal-mart districts or less, arrange a visit with your local store or market grocery manager. At your meeting, present them with samples of your merchandise that you are ready to sell.

If they are interested in selling your product, you will be given a four-page local supplier questionnaire. Fill the form in completely, sign it and mail it to the address listed on the form.

A home office buyer will review your form and if you are approved, a vendor agreement will be sent. If your application is turned down you will receive a letter explaining why it was rejected.

Once your vendor agreement has been signed, you will be assigned a supplier number and will receive a vendor number. Without this information you are unable to have orders placed or to sell products in store.

You can apply for the National Suppliers program by completing an online questionaire. A link to this is available in the resources section. Before filling this in, ensure you have an image of your product (in gif, jpg or pdf format), a UCC membership number and your federal tax ID. Make sure this is fully completed, else your application will be rejected.

The supplier development team will then review your application and pass your details on to the appropriate buyer.

At this point, your buyer may schedule a meeting to discuss opportunities, contact you by e-mail to request a more detailed questionnaire be completed as well as the purchase of a supplier evaluation report.

If all goes well, the buyer will issue a vendor agreement for you to complete, sign and return. Once this is done, a supplier number can be created which will allow your first orders to be placed.

As soon as the decision is made to accept or reject your merchandise, you will receive an email. It will either list your next steps or provide an explanation for your rejection.

  • Wal-mart encourages relationships with diverse suppliers, so if you have a business owned by a minority or a woman, make sure you list your status on your questionnaire. A certificate will be required and these can be applied for through the National Minority Supplier Development Council or the Women's Business Enterprise National Council. Links are provided in the resource section. You can fax a copy of your current certification to 479-277-2532.
