A wading pool is a great way to cool off on hot summer days. Because it is not as deep as a swimming pool,it is safer for small children. Even if you don’t own a wading pool, you can make a temporary one using a sheet of heavy plastic and some objects you may have in the garage or around the house. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sheet of heavyweight plastic (3 to 7m thick)
  • Boards, benches or other long objects
  • Bricks, cement blocks, or stones
  • Hose
  • Source of water
  1. Step 1

Clear a place on a level patch of ground that is about the same size as your sheet of plastic. Pick up any stick or stones or anything that might puncture the plastic.

  2. Step 2

Choose long objects for edge supports. Freestanding picnic table benches can be tipped on the side and make excellent supports. Long, wide pieces of lumber are also good. Logs, if you have them, are great. Make sure they do not have nails or other sharp points sticking out. You can even use chairs tipped on their sides, but make sure that none of them will stand more than a foot and a half high.

  3. Step 3

Place your edge supports in a square about two feet inside the cleared area.

  4. Step 4

Lay the plastic sheet over the supporting walls. Tuck the inside down to form a flat area, and tuck the outer sides down neatly.

  5. Step 5

Anchor the plastic on the outside edges, so that the weight of the water will not pull the plastic into the pool area. Use bricks, cement blocks, or heavy stones (or even buckets of water).

  6. Step 6

Use the hose to fill the wading pool with water. Don't fill it past six inches, and for young kids, fill it less.

  7. Step 7

Remember, this is a temporary wading pool, and will need to be disassembled within a short time. Grass will die if it's covered more than a few days.

Tips & Warnings
  • The size of the pool is only limited by the size of the sheet of plastic you use. You can create a very large pool if you have a roll of plastic that is 12 feet wide. Wading pools that are large in diameter, even though shallow in depth, can be a lot of fun even for older children.
  • Never leave small children unattended around any swimming or wading pool.
  • Never bring electrical equipment or toys near water.
  • Plastic can become slick underfoot, and children should be warned and watched for safe play.
  • Help children in and out of the wading pool.
