Things You'll Need:
- Dog
- Treats, or a few slices of cheese
- Patents
-
Step 1
Capture the attention of your dog by showing him/her the reward. If your dog has no idea what it is that your showing him/her, then put the treat in the palm of your hand, loosely close your fist, let your dog smell the treat in your hand.
-
Step 2
Put the treat out of sight, and hold your hand down low enough for your dog to place his/her paw in your hand.
-
Step 3
Let the dog sniff your empty hand while you hold your hand down. This will make the dog realize that you are waiting for something. Tell the dog to shake in a firm voice.
-
Step 4
Of course the dog will not understand what the command means. Show him/her by picking up the dogs paw.
-
Step 5
While holding your dog's paw, repeat the command.
-
Step 6
Put the dog's paw down. Repeat steps 1-6 until your dog begins to get the idea. Eventually, he/she will shake on command. Don't get discouraged if your dog stops paying attention all together. If you are unable to regain your dog's attention. Put the treat away, try again in a few days. Every dog is different. You can teach some dogs to shake in 10 minutes, while other dogs may need some work. Don't give up.
