Step 1
Bring appropriate gear. Good walking shoes are a must. Sport sandals can be a good choice because you might get wet, but hiking boots provide more support and protection. You will also need a comfortable backpack (as you will be carrying all your things), sleeping bag, clothes and protective gear such as sun block and a first aid kit. If you have expensive or delicate equipment like a computer, consider storing it somewhere in town while you are trekking.
-
Step 2
Choose a company. Chiang Mai is a popular departure point, with lots of trekking companies and a beautiful natural environment. Treks in Thailand vary widely in quality, so make sure to get recommendations from fellow travelers or at least a travel guide. Ask around at area hostels and you should find plenty of options.
-
Step 3
Confirm the activities for your trek. Options will probably include different numbers of walking days, elephant rides, rafting, landmarks, visits or stays in tribal villages, and local plant and animal attractions. Some short "trek" style tours can even be done by vehicle, without a significant amount of hiking. Also confirm the food arrangements for your trek, which will probably be dealt with by your guide. Vegetarian or other special dietary options may be available if you arrange them ahead of time.
-
Step 4
Make sure you are prepared for the physical demands by doing short hikes and walks around town in the preceding days. Practicing with your backpack will go even further toward making sure that you (and your shoes) are up to the challenge.
-
Step 5
Make your trek enjoyable! Be sure to use adequate sun protection. Also be careful to respect the local environment and culture. Carry your trash out with you, and remember that if you stay in a tribal village you should be a considerate guest.
