Pink eye is also know as conjunctivitis and is a bacterial infection. The redness, swelling, itching, burning and draining of the eyes are uncomfortable to have to deal with. Medications from the doctor work but depending on the situation they're not always easy to get to. Children most often end up with pink eye, usually from a friend because it is contagious. This article will help you treat pink eye with essential oils. The essential oil and floral waters (left over water used to make essential oils) are gentle ways to treat the delicate eye area.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 1 tsp. witch hazel
  • 1 drop chamomile roman (Anthemis nobilis) essential oil
  • 1 cup chamomile, lavender or rose floral water
  • 16 oz. bottle
  • Cotton balls or cosmetic cotton pads

How to Treat Pink Eye with Essential Oils

  1. Step 1

First to make the solution you will use. Add the floral water, essential oil and witch hazel, cover and shake gently. Add the distilled water, cover and again shake gently. Now the solution is ready to use. Also, before each use you will want gently shake the bottle.

  2. Step 2

Next before you do anything with the eyes, wash your hands well, if you are treating someone else with the pink eye make sure that they wash their hands well. This will help prevent the pink eye from transferring to another person.

  3. Step 3

Now take 2 cotton balls or cotton pads and lightly wet with the solution. Even though only one eye may be infected, treat both eyes at the same to prevent them from both becoming infected. Place one cotton ball or pad on each eye for 5 to 10 minutes keeping the eyes closed the entire time. If it's easier do one eye at a time but make sure that both eyes get done. For small children that can't follow this step see the tips.

  4. Step 4

When the 5 to 10 minutes are up, throw the cotton balls or pads away and wash your hands well again. You will want to use fresh cotton balls or pads each time.

  5. Step 5

Repeat steps 2 through 4, 3 to 4 times a day until the eye clears up.

Tips & Warnings
  • For smaller children, very light wet the cotton ball or pad with the solution, carefully wipe the eye area without getting any solution in the eye. This can be done 4 to 6 times a day.
