This early streetcar "suburb" of Atlanta, Georgia, known for its historic Victorian homes and Craftsman bungalows, is undergoing a rebirth of sorts, with new retail, restaurants and condo development. Get in and take a look around while it's still slightly under the radar.

Things You'll Need:

  • a map of Atlanta
  • transportation to Kirkwood
  1. Step 1

The central area of Kirkwood is located between Dekalb Avenue to the north, Rogers and Montgomery Streets to the west, Memorial Drive to the south and Mellrich and Winter Avenues to the east. Here you'll find a mix of people and businesses: yuppies, lower-income families, hipster professionals. The best way to get to Kirkwood is to drive, and parking is fairly easy to find on the street.

  2. Step 2

As of 2007, the median home price in Kirkwood was $250,000 and appreciating. Growing developments include Stone Gate Cottages, Kirkwood Lofts and Hawthorn Park. Townhomes are located at Kirkwood Station, a mixed-use development that also includes retail and restaurant space.

  3. Step 3

Visit some of the shops in Kirkwood's central district. You can find home furnishings, flowers, gift and pet supplies, along with a spa. Take a walk to Delano Avenue and check out Bessie Branham Park, which underwent a renovation and now features tennis and basketball courts, a ball field, a playground and a recreation center.

  4. Step 4

Grab a burger at Ann's Snack Bar on Memorial Drive, or get gourmet take-away from Sun in My Belly on College Avenue. There's also pinball and trivia at Kirkwood Aces Bar & Grille.
