How to Use the Data Editor in SPSS Statistical Software

The job of the data editor is to display the contents of the active data file. The information that is in the data editor is composed of variables and cases. In the data view, columns represent variables and rows represent observations. In variable view each row is a variable and each column is an attribute that is associated with that variable.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Enter numeric data by clicking the variable view tab which is located at the bottom of the data editor window. You will need to define the variables.
Step2
Enter string data by clicking the variable view tab at the bottom of the data editor window. In the first cell of the empty row type the variable name. Click the type cell next to your entry. Click the button to he right of the Type cell to open the Type box. Select String, click "OK."
Step3
Add variable labels to provide descriptions of variables. Click the variable view tab at the bottom of the data editor window. Then label all of your prospective columns accordingly.
Step4
Change variable and type format by clicking the Type cell. Make you changes and then click "OK" to save.

  • Variables are used to represent different types of data that you have compiled.
  • Think in terms of a survey.
