Things You'll Need:
- Form DS-11 (application for Passport)
- Present proof of U.S. Citezenship (Such as birth certificate)
- Present Proof of I.D. (such as drivers liscense)
- Two passport photos
- Money for the applicable fees

Step 1
So, your going on a trip outside the U.S. but your unclear as how to go about getting your passport, well here's how. If this is your first time getting a passport, you need to go and get it in person.

You can apply and get a passport from pretty much any post office, county clerks office, and other county, state, and municipal offices that offer it.

Now to start you need to get the DS-11 application which is the application you need to fill out in order to start the process of getting your passport. You can find them online to print up, or most offices named above should have them handy.

Everybody going on the trip needs to have their own passport, so you need to bring everyone that is planning on going, and all of their birth certificates, present I.D.'s and two passport photos each.

The passport photos need to be 2x2 inches in size
Identical
Taken within the past 6 months, showing current appearance
Color
Full face, front view with a plain white or off-white background
Between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head
Taken in normal street attire . -
Step 6
Once you have all that done, it is time to pay. Age 16 and older: The passport application fee is $67. The execution fee is $30. The total is $97. Under Age 16: The passport application fee is $52. The execution fee is $30. The total is $82. The passport application fee includes the $12.00 Security Surcharge, which became effective March 8, 2005.

Now lets say you need passports fast, like for a business trip, you pretty much do the same procedure as in the above lines, however, they offer an expedited service. This in addition to your normal fees, is 60.00 for overnight delivery.
